When I was a little kid, I used to watch an animated show called ‘Fables of the Green Forest’ on TVO (TV Ontario). While it was just a kid’s cartoon, looking back I think it had a significant impact on who I am today. Some of my earliest memories come from watching this Japanese anime series. The series consisted of the adventures of Rocky, a woodchuck, & his mate Polly in the green forest. They make a lot of friends among their fellow animal neighbours, and everyone works together to avoid the attacks of the different predators that put them in danger, such as a man, the weasel and the fox.
I bring this up because since I was a kid the theme song for the show goes through my head every single day I set foot in a forest, especially this one pictured here where I grew up. I didn’t realize it at the time, but as I grew older it dawned on me how educational the show was. I learned a great deal about the animals of the forest & their behaviours from this show (to this day every single time a blue jay squawks my mind instantly goes to the character of Sammy Blue Jay sounding the alarm to his forest friends that there was a threat)
I realise this caption does not have a lot to do directly with my image of this cute doe shaking her tail & batting her eyes at me, but it is relevant. What you can’t see or hear are the blue jays in the area sounding the alarm to alert the forest of a potential predator. Moments after this doe moved on, a coyote followed in her footsteps. A cartoon from childhood, teaching me a life lesson and, has had a direct influence on who I am today & why I developed such a love of animals. Why I spend as much time as possible in these types of environments, surrounded by the friends of the forest.
