I often am asked what my favourite experience in my career has been. My favourite career experience is right up there, topping my life’s experiences! Hands down, nothing tops swimming in the ocean alongside humpback whales! These beautiful, intelligent, caring and inquisitive giants of the sea have held a special place in my heart since childhood. What makes these encounters so special in my opinion, is the fact that it is the whales who choose to interact with us.

Oftentimes, wildlife encounters/experiences that we observe are brief. But, with humpback whales that experience is next level! Like all wild creatures, they dictate the type of encounter to be had, that said, encounters with humpbacks can often be intimate and lengthy! We are but a tiny spec in the ocean and the whales, with a single pump of their tail, could leave us and go anywhere in the deep blue ocean they please.

They often choose to interact with us, the whales feed off of our energy and in turn, we feed off of theirs. As we share the same space, diving, twisting and turning under the surface of the sea. It is a magical ballet that takes place, it stirs the imagination, evokes deep emotion and will leave an imprint on your soul for the remainder of your life, like nothing else can. I have cherished every single second I have ever been so fortunate to spend with the whales under the sea. I dream of when I may see them next. Once you lock eyes with a humpback whale, that look will pierce your soul and your life will be forever changed for the better.
