While working on an assignment in the remote northern Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, we came across this stunning piece of glacial ice providing a resting place for some sea birds. There is nothing quite like the blue hues and tones of glacial ice. It stood out from so far away against the sea ice and its surroundings.
If you are curious as to why icebergs are blue in colour? Icebergs that have been formed from older glaciers have little internal air or reflective surfaces. When long wavelength light from the sun hits the iceberg, it is absorbed, rather than reflected. The light transmitted or refracted through the ice returns as blue or blue-green and this is what we see.
